If you are one of those people who would like to visit the hairdresser every week if you could find a good one, then you might want to know some of the ways that you can spot a good hairdresser.

Word of mouth recommendation spreads quite quickly and most people who have a good hairdresser have often been recommended to a particular salon by a friend who has received good service. Most good hairdressers know how to interpret what a customer wants and will do their best to make that customer feel as valued and attractive as possible. Most good hairdressers are regularly booked up and you will probably need to make an appointment if you want to get your hair cut or restyled.

A good hairdresser will never cut your hair too short but will endeavour to get it the exact length that you want. Your hairdresser should take the time to talk to you; he or she should remember your name and what your preferences are. For the amount of time that your hairdresser spends styling your hair, they should be focussed on your needs and your wellbeing. Some salons may offer you tea or coffee while you are waiting for your hair to be shampooed, while others only provide a drink if you are having particular services such as a perm or a colour on your hair.

A good hairdresser’s pricing information should be readily available and transparent so that you don’t have to worry that there might be hidden extra costs. Items such as conditioner and hairspray should not be offered unless they are included as part of the total cost. There is nothing worse than getting your hair styled and then finding out that you have to pay extra for some of the things that you were offered when price was not mentioned until afar the fact.

Good hairdressers save customer’s information so that they know exactly what a particular client likes and what suits them best. Customers like to be treated as if they matter in all fields of business and especially in an area such as hairdressing, where knowing what suits a particular customer is extremely important. A good hairdresser will not only treat the customer with respect, she will do the same with the reception staff and the junior who is on shampoo duty.

A good hairdresser should be conversant with all the latest hair fashions and be able to interpret them in such a way that the style looks good on a wide range of customers. Hairdressers should enjoy what they are doing as this means it is more likely that they will try to achieve their best for the customer and provide them with a style that suits them and that they will be pleased to have. If you phone for an appointment and there is not one available at the time you want then a good hairdresser will promise to call you back, and stick by that promise, if things change.

There are a number of famous hairdressers in the UK and most of this is thanks to television. Increasingly, well known names in hairdressing such as Nicky Clarke, Tony and Guy and Charles Worthington bring out their own range of hair products and these are then advertised on television bringing the name of that hairdresser into the awareness of the general public. Hair products are big business for these stylists and there is always a new shampoo, taming gel, mousse or hair colour product coming onto the market.

From the nineteen fifties onwards names such as Teasey Weasey and Vidal Sassoon achieved fame across the western world for their unique takes on styling. Teasey Weasey, or Raymond as he was also known, was famed for his perms and for styling hair for both women and men. Vidal Sassoon was the inventor of the geometric cut as worn by designer Mary Quant in the nineteen sixties. The geometric cut was quite new at the time and since its invention has returned to the pages of fashion magazines time and again.

Today’s famous hairdressers can be seen giving customer restyles on famous daytime television programs while others prefer to wait for fame in the industry and good reports of their exclusive hairdressing salons. Most people cannot afford a Vidal Sassoon haircut but there are some good stylists out there who are well versed in copying the latest styles that have been introduced by the rich and famous. There are more good hairstylists around on the high street today than ever there were in the past. If you are lucky enough to find yourself a decent stylist then stick with them, they might be famous one day.

Many famous hairdressers have got where they are today not just because of their ability to style hair, but because of their willingness to serve the general public, whether that is hair styling or a new range of products designed ot keep hair healthy and shining. Some famous hairdressers are better at projecting a public image than others, Nicky Clarke seems to get more television time that either Charles Worthington or the people behind Tony and Guy. In spite of the fact that some famous hairdressing names are not so easily put to a face, it doesn’t seem to stop people from buying their products.

The public seem to be more aware of today’s famous hairdressers because of their product ranges rather than their skills at dressing hair. In the nineteen sixties Vidal Sassoon made his name because of the unusual hairstyles that he created at the time. While Nicky Clarke is often on television working as part of a makeover team and coming with styles that suit particular contestant’s faces, it is rare to see one of the other modern stylists doing the same thing. Some hairstylists are famous in the sense that they have a large customer base due to word of mouth recommendations but these hairdressers rarely become a focus of attention for the general public.

Hairdressing can be a lucrative and fulfilling career, if you genuinely like working with other people and you don’t mind being run off your feet from time to time, hairdressing may be a suitable option for you to look at. Many people get into hairdressing when they are still at school. Most busy salons require shampoo staff on a Saturday and this is a good way to try out the business and see whether it really is a career that would suit you.

Many hairdressers start out as an apprentice at a large salon, but it is possible to get into hairdressing by doing your training at the local technical college, where you will need to pass NVQs in hairdressing. You will need to complete the required levels of the National Vocational Qualification before you become a certified hairdresser. The requirements for hairdressers may vary from place to place; if you don’t live in England then you need to check requirements for your country of origin.

Most hairdressing salons experience periods where they don’t have time to turn around between customers, and other times when they are twiddling their thumbs for most of the day. What sort of business, and what volume of business a salon attracts may depend on a number of external factors, including the salon’s location. If you decide to go down the apprenticeship route to take up hairdressing as a career, then it may be a while before you actually do any hairdressing as such. Your role as an apprentice will be to watch and learn, to take customers coats, to sweep up and to make tea and occasionally shampoo a customer’s hair. You can work through your NVQs while you are working in the salon as an apprentice, this means you get on the job training to go with your theory and you get a wage, albeit a low one.

In larger salons when a junior has finished their apprenticeship, they are often taken on as a member of staff. Hairdressers may decide to set up their own salon if they have the money and some of them will set up a mobile hairdressing business styling hair in the customers’ homes. One of the best things about mobile hairdressing is the fact that you don’t have the same kind of overheads you would have if you were running your own salon. Whatever path you decide for your career, you will be working with members of the public every day of the week and you will need to be cheerful with all of them if you want to build up a loyal customer base. If you intend opening your own salon or you want to set up as a mobile hairdresser then keeping your customers will be even more important than it might be if you were working at a large salon with plenty of passing trade. Providing you are friendly and do your best to achieve what a customer wants, you should be able to enjoy your career in hairdressing.

Most professional hairdressers start as juniors while they are doing their training. If you like mixing with different types of people and enjoy the thought of making them look more attractive, then hairdressing could be a good career for you. Hairdressing is a career with a range of options from setting your own salon, working with someone else, or working for yourself. Not all hairdressers go the traditional route of working in a salon, once they have completed their training and have a bit of experience, they either set up on their own, or they travel around to people’s homes offering their services.

Training

An increasing number of hairdressers now add hair waxing and manicure to their work portfolio as this gives them a broader base to work from and these services are much in demand. Hairdressers either attend Tech College and work part time to get their qualifications, or they undertake an apprenticeship at one of the larger hairdressing salons. When hairdressers serve an apprenticeship it is highly likely that they will be keep on as a junior stylist once the apprenticeship has run its course.

As a hairdresser you need to be prepared to work long hours, to spend most of the day on your feet, and to deal with difficult customers. While you do not need much in the way of educational qualifications to become a hairdresser, you must have practical skills and be able to deal comfortably with the general public, you may also benefit from the ability to follow instructs carefully and get things right straight away. If you know how to be diplomatic and forestall problems in the salon then you will soon become a valued staff member.

Pleasing Customers

Most salons require their hairdressers to develop their own customer base and the best way of doing this is to make someone look and feel as good as possible. If a customer is pleased with the way you have cut and styled their hair then they are likely to ask for you next time they visit the salon. If a client is exceptionally satisfied then she may recommend you to her friends, which brings more business into the salon and looks good for you.

There will be occasions when a customer demands the impossible and will not be pleased no matter how good the outcome. You will need to be able to deal sensitively with a disgruntled customer, especially when you know that your work was not at fault. Diplomacy can go a long way with difficult customers, as can offering them a free restyle. If a customer is abusive however, you have every right to call your manager and have that person evicted from the salon.

Luckily, very difficult customers are not the norm. Most people will be satisfied with what you have tried to do for them and they certainly won’t be abusive. Hairdressing can be an enjoyable and fulfilling career, just so long as you learn to keep your head in a crisis.
